Aboriginal Peoples: Toward Self Government

Edited by Marie Léger

Using accounts of how indigenous Americans in Brazil, Columbia, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama are securing recognition and self-government, this book presents real possibilities for re-possessing territory, and establishing both self-government and multiethnic government. Control of natural resources and land development have become central issues to these negotiations. These recognized rights are very fragile, and are kept alive by struggle and vigilance. SC

Hot Money and the Politics of Debt

R.T. Naylor

“A ball of hot money rolls around the world. It seeks anonymity and political refuge; it dodges taxes and sidesteps currency controls; it rolls through shell companies and numbered accounts, phony charities and religious foundations. And it is kept rolling by misguided policymakers and white-collar criminals, by gun-runners and drug dealers, by superpower secret-service agents and Third World political elites preparing for retirement. And as the ball of hot money grows, so too does the international debt crisis, for hot money and international debt are two sides of the same devalued coin.”

The Privacy Poachers: How the Government and Big Corporations Gather, Use and Sell Information About You

Tony Leace

Miscellaneous methods of both general and advanced surveillance carried out upon the private citizen by employers, credit bureaus, law enforcement and various other intruding tentacles of 20th-century life are explained by a security consultant. Unfortunately, the results read more as a series of essays attempting to gain clients for the author by instilling paranoia in the reader, rather than a serious source of information that can be utilized to counter such surveillance. Some of the sociological implications are touched upon, as well as an outline sketch of the history of modern surveillance methodology, with examples of recent infringements which made the news. But ultimately, although this book is an adequate introduction to the everyday infringements on personal liberty and the basics of surveillance techniques, the serious researcher is best served elsewhere.
